artist bio

Imhyeop is a temporary consultative group of artists formed especially for the exhibition, Hard-boiled & Toxic (2018) at Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art. Composed of Gim Moongi, Yun Sungji, and Yoon Heesoo, the group has challenged to make changes in the rigid roles of the arts and art spaces’ by giving function to art works while researching ecology of the arts under the condition in which capitalism is being expedited; collaborating in the art system; and experimenting ways of communication.

introduction

Yun Sungji, representative of the group, has shown object that shake the order of things and language to deconstruct social signifier using iconic images that we find everywhere such as beverage bottle, delivery boxes, iron rod, photo of entertainers. No Hope with Neoliberalism (2016) and GMOMA_Scene #1(2018), for example, we can see her attempt to transcend as art her persevere exploration on new media environment and human life, harmful consequence of Neoliberal economy system such as rapid change and confusion in the realm of the arts, the relationship between imagination and the role of media in contemporary society, etc. In case of Gim Moongi, his exemplary series, Poor Piece (2018) exhibits condensed metaphor for radical time we are living in while it supplements and corrects uneasiness about notion of classical sculpture by projecting his own principle. Yoon Heesoo, who uses various mediums such as sound, installation, time(movement), etc., records and edits the sounds beyond auditory perceptive region that we can not normally hear without proper equipment such as reverberation and wave. With the sound montage made out of the recording, Yoon interprets and reconstructs spaces.

Imhyeop Project #1(2019) to be presented at 2019 Sea Art Festival is comprised of Gim Moongi’s Poor Piece, Yun Sungji’s Dadaepo_Chilsung Cider, and Yoon Heesoo’s Echo Marine Splash!. Through this presentation of the collaboration showing separate pieces, the group expresses the situation of split and paradoxes in which contemporary artists go through. First, A Poor Piece is in lieu of his series of paper sculpture under the same title. This time also, he has chosen paper as material against the norm that concerns durability of its material for environmental sculpture but encased them in acrylic boxes instead. Dadaepo_Chilsung Cider is an attempt to dramatize the transient point in which the relationship between art and capital(corporation) undergoes transformation from art-sponsorship to art-collaboration by presenting trays for soda bottle stacked up over and over. For this, Yun Sungji combined a well-known soda brand, Chilsung Cider trays to reconstruct them site-specifically to the Dadaepo Beach.  Played from the speaker inside the trays, Echo Marine Splash! presents a sound montage Yoon measured from invisible, the unknowable realm because it exist outside audible range under the sea of Dadaepo Beach.
