The beginning of letter 2011
Letters are used to record words and actions which become the traces of the past that the future generations will appreciate. People wouldn't have known that Songdo Beach was designated as Korea's first beach in 1950, if there were no records on its old reputation. They wouldn't have known about the Sea Art Festival either which takes its important first step this year, if there were no letters used to record it. The Sea Art Festival starts a new beginning on Songdo Beach, Korea's first beach. In commemoration of this day, the artist writes on the sand, using the sea as ink.
As a child, everyone has at least once written something with a brush. The artist has come up with the concept of this work, intrigued by the question: 'what does it look like if I write on the white and paint sandy beach with a huge 7-meter-long brush?' This work expresses the new beginning of Songdo Beach and the Sea Art Festival with a brush, making it a record of a historical event. At the same time, it expresses something we see commonly in our everyday life in the form of a sculpture, making it a fun and friendly to the viewer.
