Asneria (Donkey)

Pilar Albarracín builds performances, videos, installations and photographs. The folkloristic cliche in Albarracín’s work reveals her identity as Spanish artist and feminist via themes of globalism and localism.
In Albarracin’s installation Anseria, a dressed donkey is reading a book while standing on a pile of books, which suggests the grave.  In the surreal and uncanny of this work, we see the alter ego as doppleganger, returned phantom as a dressed animal. Anseria registers the anxiety of existence, and the desire for eternity. The pile of the books evokes the history of humananity, and the donkey reading the book looks like a scene from a fable, which can be read as a cultural anthological history of the human.
