An Itinerant Bestiary

This installation builds on an ongoing research strand, <How Not to Build a Nation> by Forest Curriculum. Proposing an alternative framework to the colonial authority of nation-states, <An Itinerant Bestiary> foregrounds non-human agencies and indigenous knowledge, especially those located within the Zomia. The Zomia is a transboundary forested region connecting various parts of South, Southeast, and East Asia that are 300 m above sea level. The flagpoles pierce the beach at uncanny angles, subverting this signifier of nationalist power, and the flags bear designs of non-/human interconnections, such as mythical creatures, trade routes of opium, and Zomia plants. The accompanying soundscape intensifies this assemblage, creating a dense, jungle-like atmosphere by bringing together the sounds of insects, fungi, digital voices, urban construction, amphibians, and birds.
