The Ocean Machine

This moving image work, projected onto a high-rise residential apartment by Ilgwang River, weaves Korean mythology, artificial intelligence, and oceanic science-fiction hence bringing together the human, non-human, and more-than-human. Kim uses machine learning to generate an imagined ‘ocean machine’ that solves the problem of oceanic microplastics in the year 2050. Using the AI text output, she visualises this creature which then interacts with the Dragon Goddess, a benevolent entity that protects the waters. Together, they revive the dead marine ecologies in the underwater landscape of this work, bringing forth schools of fish, bright coral reefs, and other fauna. However, this looping video has a non-linear, atemporal narrative, and thus resists an overtly utopian or dystopian vision, choosing instead to return to an ambiguous present that encompasses the possibilities of both.
