The Counterattack of Cnidaria

<The Counterattack of Cnidaria> comprises two huge jellyfish-like creatures; kinetic sculptures propelled by the sea breeze of Ilgwang beach, which are made of recycled plastic bottles, discarded objects, and other found materials. Envisioning these techno-mutant machinic creatures that have emerged from the oceans due to overfishing, gene-editing experiments and pollution, this work emits a vivid blue glow at night, recalling gigantic cnidarians and ancient bioluminescent creatures from the deep sea. Byungchul illustrates the strategies of non-human resilience through this mutation, even as these beings enact a kind of counterattack on humankind for our violent, exploitative colonial and capitalist practices. But this work also presents potential ways in which human communities could learn from the survival strategies of non-human marine beings.
