AnthropoPangaea

In <AnthropoPangaea>, Dawood foregrounds the superocean Panthalassa rather than the supercontinent of the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras, Pangaea. A non-centred and inverted map of deep-time, Dawood reimagines this liquid mass that once surrounded Pangaea, as constituent ‘landmasses’, each with its own rug hooked or woven texture and colour. It also references Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion maps, Anthropophagia as associated with the decolonial Tropicalia art movement in Brazil, and various modes of cultural consumption in East Asia. In our world of increasingly impermeable nation-borders further intensified by the current pandemic, this tapestry-map has been on an oceanic voyage for several months; <AnthropoPangaea> left Dawood’s studio in London, travelled to Fogo Island in Newfoundland where several artisans intervened in this map, before finally arriving at the Busan Harbour.
