Anito are spirits in pre-colonial Filipino myth that embody animist non-human nature, and have
transcultural roots in Southeast and South Asian religions. New envisions a gigantic sea-spirit that has come onto Ilgwang beach from the East Sea, wrapping its tentacles around the central beach stage. Embellished with elements of recycled plastic from centres near the site, this installation also refers to the pervasive issues of waste in oceans and the use of cities like Manila as dumping grounds by global North countries. Taking on a deeply eerie and colourful glow at night, <Anito> immerses us in New’s worlds of cyberpunk and science fiction, genres that often appropriate Asian cultures. <Anito> thus embodies multiple tensions of colonial violence, speculative imagination, and ancestral beliefs.
