Composed of a shell-like shelter at the edge of the East Sea and a serpentine ‘tail’ that traverses the width of the Ilgwang beach, this transboundary bamboo sculpture draws attention to the permeable walls that exist between human bodies and the liquid vastness of the ocean. This loosely woven structure doesn’t clearly separate the work and its surroundings but rather lets sea water flow in and out during high and low tide, creating a gestational space of incubation or liquidity. Visitors are invited to enter this cozy shelter, wherein the sounds of the waves are also magnified, creating an immersive intimacy with the sea. Through ecological sculptures such as <Gestate>, Lee seeks to heal the ruptures between human and non-human nature, considering these interrelations as inextricable.
