<The Old Pines: Becoming of the Seaside Village> delves into the vision of the pine-forest that once covered the beach area of Ilgwang, constructing five island-like structures made of pine poles and multi-coloured mosquito net. Jiandyin also references the famous novel and film <Gaenmaeul> or <Seaside Village> which is set in Ilgwang Beach in the 1950s. This work questions how spaces hold memories, how non-places become places once human bodies exist within them, and how the histories of a place unfold over time and through cultural objects. Visitors can enter these temporary islands and re-imagine alternate iterations of the current landscapes of Ilgwang Beach and the East Sea through the various porous lenses of the brightly coloured nets.
