Looking for a place to live in Busan, the main character takes a look at Yongdusan apartment near Gukje market. When she/he passes by the old Yuna Department Store building on the way to the apartment or looks over the U.S. Cultural Center (currently Busan Modern History Museum) over the window, the main character recalls the arson at the U.S. Cultural Center in Busan which occurred in March 18, 1982. The main character’s friend introduces her/him to a middle-aged woman named 'Choi Myung hwan.’ Thanks to the friend—who is in a good relationship with Choi and sometimes gets paid for managing her apartment—the main character is able to stay at the mansion owned by Choi. Having worked near the U.S. Cultural Center for more than 20 years, Choi is a witness to the arson. Also she was close to a woman named Kim Eun-sook who was one of the actual participant in the arson. Later, as they get closer, Choi Myung-hwan starts to talk about the arson little by little. Although it is a trivial story, the main character follows it to envision the insecure and chaotic situation at the time of the incident.

BAK Solmay, Novelist

BAK Solmay is a novelist born in Gwangju, Korea in 1985. Besides the novel Then What Shall We Sing?, The Eyes of Winter, The Dog I Love, she wrote full-length novels including Eul, I Want to Write a Hundred Lines, Time in the City, Slowly Head First, and International Night. She has received the Kim Seung Ok Literary Award, Moonji Literary Award, and Kim Hyeon Prize.
