The work of Gerard BYRNE in photography, film, theater and multi-screen installation examines the slippage between time and the act of image creation. BYRNE’s projects examine the ambiguities of language and of what is gained or lost in the translation from text to image. By reconstructing historically charged conversations, interviews and performances, from sources as diverse as La Revolution Surréaliste, Playboy and National Geographic, BYRNE tests our perception of the past and the present, and the inherent challenges of the visual record. Time and temporality, or ‘now’ and ‘then’ are frequent themes in BYRNE’s work. Testing the tendency of the archive to arrest the past in the present by perpetually delaying it, BYRNE questions linear time and expands our understanding of past and present. His work uses images from the past to reconstruct narrative, but this is not to say his work is in way nostalgic about the past. Rather, it asks us how we might perceive the recent past while resisting the tendency to accept the lived present as a fixed situation, in order that we might understand the present anew.
