Emeka OGBOH is an Igbo artist who primarily works with art installations based on auditory and gustatory sensuous experiences. In his practice he explores how sound and gastronomy frames our world and our understanding of it and how both hearing and tasting are deeply connected to our private, public, and collective memories. OGBOH’s artworks are both overtly political and purely aesthetic. Through his work he addresses the position of Africans living in Europe and provides a context for a critical debate of globalization, migration, and belonging. By choosing to work with the senses of hearing and tasting he creates artworks that literally get under the skin of his audience. This yields intimate aesthetic experiences in which audiences are able to connect to places in the same sensuous way as OGBOH does when he creates his artworks. In his ongoing project Lagos Soundscapes (2008-), OGBOH uses the powerful and penetrating effect of sound to carry the city of Lagos to new environments all over the world. With little sound manipulation, he brings the atmosphere of the giant capital to the recordings into his soundscapes and then to the ears of his listeners.
