A total of 40 artworks from 16 countries were selected as the result of the International Competition’s first-round review of document submissions for the Sea Art Festival
2013, which will be held at Songdo Beach from September 14 through October 13.

On the past 22nd, the Busan Biennale Organizing Committee carried the first-round review of document submissions for the International Competition for the Sea Art Festival 2013 and a total of 40 artworks from 16 countries were selected. The primary document screening was conducted by three judges, who have reviewed the submitted applications and model drawings on the basis of its relevance to the exhibition themes, balance with the marine environment, artistic significance, size and execution.

A total of 40 artworks from 16 countries were selected through the first-round review, which include 20 works from Korea, 3 works from the United States, 2 works from Italy, 1 works from Germany, 1 work from India, 1 work from the Netherlands, 1 work from Serbia, 1 work from China, 1 work from Bulgaria, 1 work from Thailand, 1 work from Spain, 1 work from Brazil, 1 work from Sweden, 1 work from Canada, 1 work from the United Kingdom, 2 works from Korea/the United States, and 1 work from Korea/France. Compared to the Sea Art Festival 2011, where 41 artworks from 10 countries were showcased, this year’s selections show an increase in the number of participating countries by 5, which well indicates the diverseness of this year’s exhibition.

From Jun 17 through 21, the Organizing Committee will be accepting model submissions for the second-round review to nominate special selection awardees. Based on the results of the nominations, 20 works will be installed at Songdo Beach for a final assessment.

Meanwhile, a total of 109 submissions from 25 countries were submitted for the first-round review for this year’s International Competition, which shows approximately 45% increase in the number of submissions compared to the Sea Art Festival 2011, where 75 works (48 domestic and 27 international) from 17 countries were submitted. Compared to this year’s domestic submissions (58 works), a greater increase was found in the international submissions (51 works) from various parts of the world, including Asia, North and South America, Europe and Africa, a phenomenon that the Organizing Committee sees as the result of a rise of international awareness of the Sea Art Festival and its strengthened global online promotion. Furthermore, the shift in the types of works, which has once centered heavily on sculpture and installation, to more diverse genres such as painting, video, photography, and performance is also seen as a positive change.

The important point to note is that people’s interests in the Sea Art Festival have been continuous and growing. For this year’s International Competition, a great number of artists applied, reassuring the status of the event. Among the applicants were the grand prize winner of the Sea Art Festival 2011, Matteo Berra from Italy, and mid-career artists who have been invited before for the Busan Sculpture Project, Busan Biennale 2006 and the Sea Art Festival, Busan Biennale 2008. Moreover, there was 71% increase in the number of young applicants in the 20s (7 artists 12 artists) and 190% increase in the group participation (11 works 32 works) marked by a number of collaborations between domestic and international artists. These statistics are encouraging results of the competition and well represent the identity of the Sea Art Festival that is young, experimental, and open.

We thank the artists, who have participated in our International Competition, for their interests and support, and we will continue to put in our best efforts for the successful preparation of the Sea Art Festival 2013.

The Sea Art Festival 2013 will be held at Songdo Beach with the theme of “With Songdo: Remembrance, Marks, People” from September 14 through October 13, and will showcase a total of 35 domestic and international artworks, including 20 works selected through an International Competition and 15 works of invited artists.
