Independent Curator Sung-Ho Kim’s Nomination for
Artistic Director, Sea Art Festival 2015
- Held at Dadaepo Beach for 30 days from September 19th to October 18th -
The Busan Biennale Organizing Committee (hereinafter referred to as Committee) will enter into a system of making preparations on exhibition on a full scale after finally confirming independent curator and art critic Sung-Ho Kim as the artistic director to be in charge of curating the Sea Art Festival 2015 to be held at Dadaepo Beach from upcoming September 19th to October 18th.
The Committee had put up a total of 16 curators on the list of candidates through the Artistic Director Recommendation Committee meeting in February. Then in March, the Artistic Director Nomination Committee was held twice, and it finally confirmed independent curator Sung-Ho Kim as the artistic director of Sea Art Festival 2015.
Artistic Director Sung-Ho Kim of Sea Art Festival 2015 is an independent curator and art critic who had graduated Painting at Chungang University, got master’s degree in Science of Art and Culture at same University and received doctorate degree in Aesthetics and Science of Arts at Université Paris 1-Panthéon Sorbonne. Artistic Director Sung-Ho Kim has experience of curating exhibitions under unique nature environment as well as standardized exhibition venues as he served Artistc Director of 2014 Geumgang Nature Art Biennale and Exhibition Director of Changwon Asian Art Festival 2008. Based on such experience, he is expected to satisfactorily unravel the unique characteristics that the sea art festival is aiming at called experimentation, openness and public affinity.

Artistic Director Sung-Ho Kim has proposed an exhibition theme of ‘See – Sea & Seed’ as he focused on the sense of place of Dadaepo Beach where Sea Art Festival is held for the first time through the proposal. The exhibition theme implies a meaning of ‘to see the sea and seed’ while containing the significance of the ‘sea’ and the cultural art ‘seed sprouts’ at Dadaepo Beach where Sea Art Festival is held for the first time. The Committee is planning to actively communicate with the public with the artworks that coincide with the exhibition theme through the exhibition curating ability of Artistic Director Sung-Ho Kim.
The unique sea art brand `Sea Art Festival’ will be held for 30 days from September 19th to October 18th of this year at Dadaepo Beach.
Meanwhile, Dadaepo Beach where Sea Art Festival 2015 will be held is located at Dadae-dong of Saha-gu, Busan which is proud of a wide site with length of 900m width of 100m and total area of about 53,000 m2. Not only the calm sea wind and less influence from the typhoon, but high rate of usage have played a decisive role in being selected as the venue from the fact of having advantage in the illustration of exhibition and use of space that has given life to the oceanic characteristics.
Also, Dadaepo Beach has preserved the natural environment well from the surrounding business district and able to adequately reveal the artistic value of outdoor exhibition so that the spectators visiting the exhibition venue are expected to fully enjoy the unique atmosphere where autumn sea and contemporary art that only sea art festival has are blended together.
The Committee will host the upcoming Sea Art Festival 2015 in Saha-gu for the first time followed by Songdo Beach that was the hosting are of the last Sea Art Festival, it is expected to contribute to the growth of business district and the culture of West Busan area. In case of the low accessibility, it is planning to pay full attention in preparing for various viewing support plans such as shuttle bus.
The Sea Art Festival 2015 will be held from September 19th to October 18th at Dadeapo Beach, and the details of progress related to Sea Art Festival 2015 are scheduled to be continuously posted via the website of the Committee(www.busanbiennale.org).
