Busan Biennale

The Busan Biennale is a biannual international contemporary art show that integrated three different art events held in the city in 1998: the Busan Youth Biennale, the first biennale of Korea that was voluntarily organized by local artists in 1981; the Sea Art Festival, an environmental art festival launched in 1987 with the sea serving as a backdrop; and the Busan International Outdoor Sculpture Symposium that was first held in 1991. The biennale was previously called the Pusan International Contemporary Art Festival (PICAF) before it launched.

The biennale has its own unique attribute in that it was formed not out of any political logic or need but rather the pure force of local Busan artists’ will and their voluntary participation. Even to this day their interest in Busan's culture and its experimental nature has been the key foundation for shaping the biennale’s identity.

This biennale is the only one like it in the world that was established through an integration of three types of art events such as a Contemporary Art Exhibition, Sculpture Symposium, and Sea Art Festival. The Sculpture Symposium in particular was deemed to be a successful public art event, the results of which were installed throughout the city and dedicated to revitalizing cultural communication with citizens. The networks formed through the event have assumed a crucial role in introducing and expanding domestic art overseas and leading the development of local culture for globalized cultural communication. Founded 38 years ago, the biennale aims to popularize contemporary art and achieve art in everyday life by providing a platform for interchanging experimental contemporary art.

The deconstructionism adopted the form of literature to philosophical context. The art has transformed itself into the philosophy. The art has gone from the art of “visualization (retina)” to the art of “thought (meditation)” after a French artist Duchamp appeared. In conclusion, the artistic trend show there's little difference between the art and the philosophy. My philosophy in the art can be characterized by 'conservatism'. But the 'conservatism' is rooted in the reorganized form not from its original form. Therefore it is natural the 're'-construction, or 'conservatism', is dictated by the participation of the audience.

1. The 'Let's Play with Me!' is an innovative project to deck the stairs―near Haeundae Beach, especially the one near The Westin Chosun Busan―with a sort of slide catered for the amusement of the children. White sands and foot path are linked by the stairs, but the stairs do not have regular width. Furthermore, each step of the stairs is not smoothly connected. Therefore, I would like to suggest a slide for children, which will replace the function of the existing stairs. This slide, dedicated to children, will be the first step to realize the perception of 'play ground in daily life'.

2. In Dalmaji (welcoming the moon, when literally translated) Park, there is a valuable place which keeps a fine view that shouldn't be missed. The spot is none other that a stroll path that runs from Chungsapo to Mipo. You will find a magnificent view harmoniously composed of sea, mountain and woods through a dense forest while walking along the slope toward the sea side. On the very place are there two old benches side by side.
Constant wind and salinity from the sea made the benches worn out and broken. The back of one bench is roughly tied with electric wire, and you can barely put your back on the bench. The screw bolts of the other bench have been broken. As a result, the back of the bench was hard to be fixed on the right position, and the back itself was partially shattered. However, the paralyzed functions of the bench are resurrected when the perception of 'conservatism' of the architecture is employed. Now, the bench presents a work of art and a piece of public furniture at the same time.
On the bench! People will sit even for a while when they are enraptured by the admirable scenery. The benches, which were worn out and loosing their functions, were given back to their own place with their innate nature after the touch of the artistic reinforcement. The benches become a part of the nature, and we enjoy “the nature”.
