Busan Biennale

The Busan Biennale is a biannual international contemporary art show that integrated three different art events held in the city in 1998: the Busan Youth Biennale, the first biennale of Korea that was voluntarily organized by local artists in 1981; the Sea Art Festival, an environmental art festival launched in 1987 with the sea serving as a backdrop; and the Busan International Outdoor Sculpture Symposium that was first held in 1991. The biennale was previously called the Pusan International Contemporary Art Festival (PICAF) before it launched.

The biennale has its own unique attribute in that it was formed not out of any political logic or need but rather the pure force of local Busan artists’ will and their voluntary participation. Even to this day their interest in Busan's culture and its experimental nature has been the key foundation for shaping the biennale’s identity.

This biennale is the only one like it in the world that was established through an integration of three types of art events such as a Contemporary Art Exhibition, Sculpture Symposium, and Sea Art Festival. The Sculpture Symposium in particular was deemed to be a successful public art event, the results of which were installed throughout the city and dedicated to revitalizing cultural communication with citizens. The networks formed through the event have assumed a crucial role in introducing and expanding domestic art overseas and leading the development of local culture for globalized cultural communication. Founded 38 years ago, the biennale aims to popularize contemporary art and achieve art in everyday life by providing a platform for interchanging experimental contemporary art.

Haesun Hwang is a person with a full sense of literature, whose work deals with metalanguage and emotions we cannot fully define in words. She creates white canvas still life objects, as well as white paintings/relief on gallery walls and minimalist video works with reduced narrative and visuals. Although she studied sculpture, she also uses painting to explore ideas of representation and nonrepresentation and language as a signifier and transcendence. If you regard the work as painting, it also becomes sculpture at that moment, and if one tries to signify the meaning of the work, the meaning slips away. The meaning of her work is revealed from the periphery and the concealed areas. She uses objects of everyday life, such as paper, erasers, ribbons, buttons, rings, buckets, contact lenses, candy, cloth, scissors, and mirrors. The white canvas works recreate the simple compositions and colors characteristic of the still life paintings of renowned artist Giorgio Morandi in a three dimensional form. These works go beyond the properties of traditional sculpture.
Still Life: The canvas cloth achieves the form of a three dimensional still life series.
Spatial: The objects placement in the gallery also works with the space to create a spatial series.
Mirror: On mirror plates scenes of objects and landscapes are silkscreened in progression, making a mirror series.
Video: In addition, video works expressing the delicate psychological nature of everyday life form a video series.
While the forms are varied the content is similar, dealing with that which is inexpressible in language, cannot be represented, and has an uncertainty of sensation.
The biennale? Here is Where We Meet and Sparkling Path deal with the same subject matter as described above. While the park is a public space, the experience of the work is of a personal psychological nature.
Here is Where We Meet and Sparkling Path make paths into the space of human thought and psyche by inscribing words into stone slabs. The site gains an identity of place through the experience of spectators. The placelessness of a public space become a personal psychological space through private memories and experiences. By exploring the gap between possibility and impossibility of communication in her work, Haesun Hwang produces a work true to her subject matter that also succeeds as public art.
