Sung Baeg was born in 1975 in Busan, lives and works in Busan. This avant-garde artist is currently enrolled in doctorate program in Busan University; has MA in Art Management from same university in 2019; and has BA in Sculpture from Dong-A University in 2006. He is an active artistic director and arts organizer as well for the events including: Busan International Performing Art Festival and Open Arts Project. He is also an active practitioner in international art scenes including: France, Germany and Iceland, etc. participating International Biennale in Iceland-Fresh Winds in Garður (2016), International Performance Congrès in Berlin(2017).

Sung Baeg has presented his unique style of avant-garde and experimental arts using expression methods regardless of genres including not only installation, but also sculpture, performance, eastern painting, and traditional forms of expression such as stone rubbing. Through internet live performance from 2000 through 2010 in particular, he has gotten international recognition before Korea for his artistic quality, which was started with the performance entitled, Remembering Butterfly (2000) that portrayed butterfly by splashing sumi ink over a rice paper to the lyrical cello play. Besides, there are Not Able to Speak II(2011) and Messenger-Chair(2011). Though it does not show usual aesthetic of contemporary sculpture, they allows us to peek at his thoughts on sculpture as primitive and principal approach to the arts through metaphysical forms that concerns existence while bending and coiling wire. Also, he has presented My body(2018) with images of trashes on streets, fallen leaves, patterns of paving block, manhole cover patters that form urban landscape using stone rubbing, a traditional technique in the East. 

The work that he presents for 2019 Sea Art Festival Messenger 28092019(2019) conveys metaphoric message for Busan to pursue ideal cultural ecosystem through innuendo about ecosystem of the nature. This performance is composed of two parts. First part asks four random audience to pull ropes together that are connected to edges of square steel frames and large plant in it symbolizing Busan’s cultural ecosystem till they raise the frame to a certain height. The work conveys message that the same as it would break the balance if one pulls harder while raising the frame/plant, Busan’s cultural ecosystem’s healthy balance can be kept only when all of each everyone from the audience, artist, organizer to institutions support with sound thoughts. In second part, the artist adds cloth on the square frame in which the artist performs live painting on the body of the percussionist playing music. This reflects artist’s metaphoric ways of thinking; body of the percussionist for human, sandy beach for the land, and cloth for sky.
