Vanished Memories
3.2×3.2×7m
stainless steel, urethane painting
Kim's work addresses the transformations which have shaped Songdo beach over the past decades. Motivated by childhood memories of family strolls along the bridge and evenings spent with friends at the beach Kim wishes to give form to the forces, man made as well as natural that have shaped the site. The work seeks to weave together past and future, personal and collective memory, despair and hope.
The artist considers natural disasters, such as typhoons, which wrecked havoc on the beach, responding by erecting a multi-colored representation of a tornado. This rainbow-hued tornado serves as a symbol of past devastation, change, and the hope that such transformations may ultimately lead to a brighter future.
