BUSAN BOMBORA 2011

BUSAN BOMBORA 2011

Inspired by a deep affection for the abundant synchronistic form and symmetry found harmoniously in the natural world, the sculpture ‘Busan Bombora’ employs the natural accelerating curves of Eucalypt sticks to replicate the flowing movement of a cresting wave. This work demonstrates the similar design dynamics of very different natural materials. As a ‘Golden Section of Proportion’ it expresses motion and potential inertia by the distribution of volume and the designated direction of a myriad of accelerating arcs.

The intention is to celebrate the glory of the ocean and forest and our bio-diverse dependence upon each, rather than exploiting nature as a resource or dumping ground to fortify human egotistical domination.

The ‘Busan Bombora’ is a static, though dynamic depiction of a real life pitching ocean wave to impose a ‘flight or fight’ adrenalin sensation that one would experience when being confronted by such a voluminous breaking wave. As a surfer the inherent dangers posed by such power and proportion of the ocean is most respectfully familiar to me, so this work apprehends yet endeavors to share and stimulate an instinctive survival response, while a subtle reminder of our evolutionary genetic migration from the sea.
